Privacy Policy

This policy describes what data the TankLens iPhone app and the tanklens.app website process, why, and on what basis. We wrote it so that it can be read in full.

Data controller

The data controller is Novit-Media Michał Nowicz, ul. Południowa 21, 43-190 Mikołów, Poland, VAT ID PL6262840744. Privacy contact: info@tanklens.app.

In short

  • TankLens requires no account and does not collect your e-mail address or phone number.
  • Your cars, fill-ups and photos are stored on your iPhone and — if iCloud is on — in your private iCloud database. We have no access to them.
  • The photo of the display is read on the device by default. It goes to the cloud only with your consent, without EXIF data and location, and we keep no copy.
  • App usage statistics are anonymous and can be turned off in Settings.
  • We show no ads and sell no data.

Data you enter in the app

Cars (name, fuel type), fill-ups (date, amount, entry currency — PLN or EUR, liters, price per liter, odometer, full-tank flag, station name), optionally photos of the display and the fill-up location. This data is stored locally on the device (SwiftData) and, when iCloud is on, synced through Apple’s CloudKit service in your private database, accessible only to your Apple Account. Novit-Media has no access to this data and does not store it on its own servers.

You can also import entries from a CSV file previously exported from TankLens (Settings → Import data): you pick the file in the system file picker, it is read only locally on the device and nothing is sent anywhere, and imported entries are treated like manually entered ones — stored locally and, when iCloud is on, in your private CloudKit database.

Basis: performance of a contract (providing the app’s features). You can delete the data at any time in Settings → Manage data; deletion also covers iCloud and your other devices.

On-device photo recognition

The photo of the display is first analyzed directly on your iPhone using the system text recognition (Apple Vision). The photo does not leave the device in this step. Whether a photo is kept with the entry is your choice in Settings → Scanning (“Photo Retention”).

Cloud AI analysis (optional)

When on-device recognition doesn’t give a conclusive result, the app asks whether to send the photo for AI analysis. You can consent once for a given photo or turn it on permanently in Settings → Scanning. Without your consent the photo is never sent.

What is sent: only the photo of the display, with EXIF metadata (including GPS location) removed, a random app installation identifier (UUID) used for rate limiting, and the entry’s currency code (PLN or EUR) as a request parameter. For AI analysis we do not send your entries, car name or location.

Where: to a server operated by Novit-Media, which forwards the photo to an external image-recognition model provider (Anthropic, OpenAI or Google, depending on service availability) solely to read the numbers. The server stores no copy of the photo or the result; processing ends the moment the response is returned to the app. Model providers process the data under their API terms, without using it to train models, as declared by those services.

Basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you can withdraw at any time in Settings.

Location

If you grant permission, the app gets your location once at the moment you confirm a fill-up from a camera photo or save a manual entry with the current date — to show the station on a map in the entry details. Never in the background and never for tracking. The location is stored only with the entry, on the device and in your iCloud. If you don’t save the entry, it isn’t stored anywhere. Map tiles are provided by Apple Maps under Apple’s terms.

Separately — currency detection: when you open the new fill-up form and on the confirmation screen for a camera photo, the app may get your location once to suggest the entry’s currency (PLN or EUR) — only if the app has already been granted location access; currency detection never triggers a permission prompt. The country is determined by Apple Maps (Apple reverse geocoding): the location point goes to Apple, under Apple’s terms, not to Novit-Media servers. Neither the point nor the country determined for this purpose is stored on the device or in iCloud, and neither is logged anywhere. You can turn detection off in Settings → Units → Currency.

Anonymous usage statistics

The app uses TelemetryDeck (TelemetryDeck GmbH, Berlin) for anonymous, aggregated usage statistics: which screens are opened, whether photo recognition succeeded, app and OS version. The user identifier is one-way hashed on the device and does not allow us or TelemetryDeck to identify you. We send no data from your entries, photos or location. You can turn statistics off in Settings (“Anonymous usage statistics”).

Basis: our legitimate interest in improving the app (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), with the right to object by turning it off in Settings.

Apple diagnostic data

If you agreed in your iPhone settings to share diagnostic data with developers, Apple may pass us anonymous crash and performance reports. You manage this in iOS settings.

The tanklens.app website

The web server records standard access logs (IP address, time, page address, browser) to keep the service secure and running, on the basis of legitimate interest; logs are deleted automatically.

The site may use Google Analytics (Google Ireland Ltd.) to measure traffic — only after your consent given in the cookie notice. Without consent no Google Analytics cookies are set. You can change your choice by deleting this site’s cookies.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict processing, port your data, object, and withdraw consent. Most app data is solely under your control on the device — you can export it (CSV) and delete it in Settings. For anything else, write to info@tanklens.app. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Polish supervisory authority (Prezes UODO) or your local data protection authority.

Children

The app and the website are not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes

We will announce material changes to this policy in the app or on this page. The current version is always available at tanklens.app.
